Rupert is set to play in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, a feature film set up at
Miramax, based on the book by John Boyne, written and to be directed
by Mark Herman (Little Voice, Brassed Off). It will also feature David
Thewlis (Harry Potter, Kingdom of Heaven) and Vera Farmiga (The
Departed).

Glamour Magazine have confirmed that Rupert Friend will be featuring in their April issue in the form of an exclusive interview.

Rupert is set to star in Michael Almeryda's version of The Merchant of Venice, with an ensemble cast including Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart, Sam Shepard, Gerard Butler, Zooey Deschanel and Q'Orianker Kilcher.

Text by Shakespeare, but with a screenplay by John Logan (Gladiator) the action has been updated to take place in modern las vegas.

 

Jolene is about a girl of that name who having been abused as a child finds herself falling for a series of diverse but equally abusive partners as she grows up. Rupert is to star as Coco Leger, a drug addicted tattoo artist from New Orleans

"In the first shot I ever put on celluloid I was lying in Johnny Depp's lap, with him covered in sick and piss and all scabby and horrible" says Rupert Friend of his 2004 debut in The Libertine, about the syphilitic decline of the great 17th-century poet and debauchee the Earl of Rochester.

Friend has seldom been out of period costume since. Pride and Prejudice followed and there's a clutch of films due out in the coming six months or so: The Moon and the Stars, Angels and Virgins and The Last Legion. Most recently though, he has resurfaced (in 21st-century wardrobe) in Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont, a quirky and thoughtful odd-couple story with Joan Plowright. "A popcorn movie? No. The ride of your life? No. Something that may touch some people? I would hope so".

Early rehearsals took place in front of a portrait of Plowright's late husband Laurence Olivier - enough to give any young actor the heebie-jeebies. "I was always vaguely thinking, I'll try, mate, I'll try!"

Last weekend Rupert was awarded the award for Best International Newcomer 
(for the Libertine) at the Ischia Global Film Festival.

After completing the filming of Outlaw, Rupert is on a roll and now due to start filming The Other Side this summer.

Rupert plays Brittany Murphy's sailor father with ensemble cast set to include Tim Roth, Angelica Huston, Brittany Murphy, Ryan Gosling, Jason Lee, Jim Broadbent, Giovanni Ribisi, Fiona Shaw and Isaac Hayes.
